34.5" x 48"; Oil and Graphite on Wood.

A checkered flag signifies the end of a motor sports
contest, a sort of teleology on wheels.
While researching cosmological models for this piece,
I came across Kepler’s
transcriptions of planetary motion into musical notation. Working in reverse
(half notes equal galaxies, quarter notes equal globular clusters, etc.), the
first five bars of the Star Spangled Banner have been transcribed onto the white
sections of this painting.
