Statement
In my current work I’ve used contemporary astrophotography as a reference
and context. In addition to providing a playground for figure/ground experiments,
this has given me the opportunity to reflect on the role of landscape in
art.
It occurs to me that the
Hubble Space Telescope images occupy the same place in the
21st Century imagination that the paintings of the Lumenist
and Hudson River Valley Schools did in the 19th Century. Both
technologies/practices
produce images that work as icons of awe and as expressions of
a reverence for the mystery of the natural world that is so
often lacking in modern
life.
Some of the earlier work brings together my experience as
a motorcycle racer with my passion for astronomy and
cosmology. In depicting violent
crashes, I am less concerned with terror and pain (although I
have experienced both) than I am with exploring the beauty
of unintended, unexpected and
uncomposed motion through space.
